L'Arche Calgary is Home

The L’Arche Calgary Community consists of Core Members (persons with intellectual disabilities), Assistants (staff), our Office Team, Volunteers, and an amazing Board of Directors, who are committed to fostering relationships with one another. We strive to create a welcoming, inclusive environment where everyone feels a true sense of belonging. Through our homes (residential support), Day Program, Supported Independent Living Program and community activities, we honour the dignity and worth of every individual, transforming lives by building meaningful relationships.

Our Vision and Values

We Foster a Vibrant Community

We share an extraordinary life in a community built on warmth, celebration, cherished traditions, togetherness, and a deep sense of belonging.

We Celebrate the Value of Each Person

We celebrate the individuality of each person, ensuring their voice is heard and their preferences are respected in all we do.

Journey Together with Respect

We care how our actions affect others. We help one another and build positive, supportive relationships.

Nurturing our Gifts and Growth

We encourage one another’s unique gifts and personal growth, creating a space rooted in safety and trust.

Unique Community Model

Persons with disabilities are called “Core Members“, rather than “clients”, “patients”, or “consumers”. They are at the Core of everything we do and are the reason our community exists. Those who provide assistance to Core Members in our homes are called “Assistants“, rather than “staff”, “employees”, or “counselors”. Individuals lead their own lives with the support of Assistants. Assistants and Core Members live together in homes in the same way that many people share home life.

Caregiving is more than just meeting physical needs, it’s about building meaningful connections. In a community of interdependence, everyone has something to offer. Assistants don’t just care for others, they care deeply, forming bonds that go beyond the surface to support the whole person. Together, Core Members and Assistants shape a thriving community, where every contribution matters.

Our History

1964
L’Arche began in France.
It was a compassionate response to the plight of people with intellectual disabilities living in grim institutions, shut away from society.
1969
L’Arche Daybreak starts in Richmond Hill, Canada.
Canadians Steve and Ann Newroth were so transformed by their experience of L’Arche in France that they began to dream of bringing L’Arche to Canada.
1973
L'Arche Calgary is founded.
Sister Donna-Marie Perry FCJ, Pat & Jo Lenon, and Emile Lemire began L'Arche as an act of faith, without knowing how it will be funded.
2025
Today, there are over 100 people living and working at L'Arche Calgary.
There are now 5 homes and 2 programs where people share life and work together and try to shape a more human society.
